Introduction

Between the end of the American Civil War and the start of World War I, over 40 million immigrants swept into the United States from all over Europe.  They came from places like Germany, Italy, France, Poland, and Sweden.  Some came looking for jobs and for individual rights, others were fleeing famine or oppressive governments.  Each brought with them a language, a culture, and a past.  Now, close to a century later, you're going to visit the lands that sent us our ancestors so many years ago.

You have just been hired at "World Travel, Inc.", the nations largest travel agency, catering mainly towards families wishing to visit Europe while their children are on summer break.  Teamed with three co-workers, it is your job to visit one of the countries listed below, and to create a travel brochure that will entice visitors from the United States.  A promotion and a huge pay raise (along with an A) await the group that creates the most interesting and convincing travel brochure for their country.  Good Luck.

The Task

Your group task will be to create a travel brochure for one of the following European countries:

  • Italy
  • France
  • Germany
  • Poland
  • Sweden
In that brochure, you are going to have to include information on the sites to see while families are visiting, a recommendation on a hotel and restaurant to use, flight schedules, a brief write up on the countries current events and past history, create a map of the major attractions that will be easy for visitors to follow, and provide pertinent information on climate and exchange rates.

The Process
  1. First, choose a group of four total students.
  2. Each student must choose a role in the group.  Read the descriptions below to choose the role that suits you best:
Historian - The job of the historian will be to collect facts about your countries past and present.  The historian will be required to create a timeline of your countries history, from settlement to current day.  This summary should highlight the major events that have shaped the country into what it is today.  In addition, the historian is responsible for typing a two page summary about three of the most influential people in the history of the your country.  Lastly, the historian will type a one page summary of current events occurring right now in the country that you are traveling to.  These current events will let travelers know what is going on in their destination country so they can best plan their trip (ie. are there riots in the capital, a new museum opening? etc.)

Geographer - The job of the geographer is to find information about the climate and physical features of your country.  Some of your work will include simple map work.  On these maps, you will be filling in some information that you will be finding includes the capital city and the largest cities, climate, several points of interest, and travel/flight information regarding your country.

The Business Analyst - As the economist of the group, it will be your job to handle the money.  Your are going to be responsible for collecting data about the costs of flights, hotels, and meals, and creating three separate magazine ads to advertise the best options in each for our travelers.

Layout Artist - The job of the layout artist is to incorporate the information that the other three members of the group have researched into one comprehensive PowerPoint slide-show brochure (as shown in class) for your country.  You will be responsible for presenting this brochure to the class.

When you have chosen the role that most interests you, click on the title for that role to receive your directions for this assignment.

Conclusion

This WebQuest will bring each of you a little closer to understanding and appreciating the homelands from which many of the immigrants who settled the US in the early 20th century came from.  By reading about their histories, their foods and historical attractions, and their geographic features, hopefully you will begin to find a new respect for the people of Europe, your ancestors.
